DBP uses hazard platform for risk management

The Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) has partnered with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to integrate geohazard information into the bank’s risk management and lending operations. This collaboration aims to enhance the bank’s ability to assess and manage risks associated with natural hazards, ultimately supporting its goal of promoting sustainable development in the Philippines.

Under the agreement, DBP will gain access to GeoRiskPH, PHIVOLCS’ science-based hazard information platform, to support evidence-based credit evaluations and data-driven business decisions. The platform provides critical information on geohazards, enabling DBP to make more informed decisions when evaluating loan applications and managing its portfolio.

Strengthening Risk Management

DBP President and Chief Executive Officer Michael O. de Jesus said the partnership is a manifestation of how government agencies can collaborate and leverage shared expertise in advancing a safer, more resilient, and sustainable Philippines. By integrating GeoRiskPH into its operations, DBP can enhance its risk management capabilities, reducing the potential impact of natural hazards on its loan portfolio and investments.

The partnership will allow DBP to use GeoRiskPH and its HazardHunterPH Pro application to assess the potential impact of natural hazards on loan collaterals, investments, acquired assets, branch locations, and other bank facilities. This will enable DBP to identify areas of high risk and take proactive measures to mitigate potential losses. Additionally, the platform will provide DBP with real-time hazard data and risk analysis, supporting geohazard mapping and vulnerability assessments for disaster preparedness.

GeoRiskPH is a centralized government platform that provides real-time hazard data and risk analysis to support geohazard mapping and vulnerability assessments for disaster preparedness. The platform is designed to support evidence-based decision-making, enabling government agencies and financial institutions like DBP to make more informed decisions when evaluating risks and managing resources.

Capacity-Building Training

DBP and PHIVOLCS will conduct bank-wide capacity-building training on the use of the platform and HazardHunterPH Pro. The training will cover key business areas, including lending, branch banking, special assets, and credit appraisal. This training will ensure that DBP personnel are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilize the platform and make data-driven decisions.

As the country’s ninth-largest bank, with total assets amounting to P1.041 trillion, DBP provides credit support to priority sectors such as infrastructure and logistics, micro, small and medium enterprises, the environment, and social services and community development. By leveraging GeoRiskPH, DBP can make more informed decisions, which could lead to more effective risk management and sustainable financing for projects that generate economic activity, particularly in the countryside.

It’s likely that this partnership will have a positive impact on DBP’s institutional resilience, as it will enable the bank to better assess and manage geohazard risks, ultimately supporting its goal of promoting sustainable development in the Philippines. Additionally, the partnership will contribute to the development of a more resilient and sustainable financial system, as it will enable DBP to provide more effective support to its clients and stakeholders.

Supporting Sustainable Development

DBP’s initiative to strengthen its risk management capabilities is a step towards supporting financing for projects that generate economic activity, particularly in the countryside, according to Mr. De Jesus. By integrating GeoRiskPH into its operations, DBP can enhance its credit evaluation processes, making it a more reliable partner for projects that aim to promote sustainable development in the Philippines.
